Travelling Abroad With Pets: Plan the Journey and Stay Connected

An international trip with a pet has two itineraries to coordinate: yours and theirs. Whether you are relocating overseas or planning a longer stay, clear handover arrangements and a working phone can make it easier to keep everyone informed. Build your communication plan alongside the transport arrangements, before departure day gets busy.

The quick answer

Confirm the pet’s route and collection contacts, keep essential documents available offline, and arrange mobile data for your own arrival and transit stops. A travel eSIM can support messaging and updates, but most data-only plans do not provide ordinary phone calls or SMS.

How we compare eSIM plans. MeSIM sells the plans featured on this site.

Coordinate your pet’s route before booking your own connections

Write down departure and arrival locations, planned handover times and who is responsible for each stage. Your pet may travel separately from you, so agree how changes will be communicated and who can collect them if your own flight is delayed.

Check current entry requirements with the destination’s official authorities and confirm the transport provider’s route and carrier arrangements. Requirements depend on the animal, origin, destination and transit route; a general travel checklist cannot establish eligibility.

For a move involving the UK and an overseas destination, Tailored Pet Travel offers pet transport services across the UK, Europe and worldwide. Ask for a route-specific quote and confirm what is included in paperwork, handovers and journey updates before booking.

Agree how you will receive journey updates

Ask whether updates arrive by WhatsApp, email, ordinary phone call or SMS. Save the transport team’s number with its international country code and nominate a backup contact. Agree a way to get in touch if a flight changes or an airport handover takes longer than expected.

Data-only eSIMs can support internet messaging and app calls where those services are available. They do not automatically give you a local phone number or ordinary voice service. If the handler needs to call your normal number, check your home carrier’s overseas calling arrangements and charges before leaving.

Match mobile coverage to your own itinerary

Choose data for the places where you will actually use your phone, including an overnight transit stop. A country plan can suit a single destination; regional or global plans can cover a longer itinerary, but you still need to check every country in the coverage list.

Compare validity, activation timing and high-speed allowances before buying. Country-specific exceptions can apply within one regional or global plan. Install using a stable internet connection and follow the individual plan’s instructions about when to activate it.

  • Check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
  • Keep your home line’s data roaming off if you are using a travel eSIM for data.
  • Save the collection address and transport contacts before departure.

Keep an offline handover pack

Save copies of the booking, agreed itinerary, collection address and relevant documents on your phone before travel. Keep any required originals accessible: a digital copy is a backup, not a substitute for documents the carrier or authorities require.

Download an offline map around the arrival point and carry a charged power bank. Send your expected arrival time to the person meeting you before departure, then update them when you reconnect. Mobile data helps with coordination, but your handover plan should still work during a connection outage.

Frequently asked questions

Can a travel eSIM track my pet?

An eSIM provides connectivity for a compatible device. It does not itself track your pet. Ask the transport provider how they share progress and handover updates.

Do I need a global eSIM for international pet travel?

Only if its coverage and terms suit your own itinerary. A country or regional plan may be enough. Check transit stops and remember that your phone’s eSIM does not provide connectivity for the pet’s handler.
